What is the short answer?
Check a hotel room for bed bugs before you unpack. PestChief's five minute routine: leave luggage in the bathroom, pull back the sheets and inspect the mattress seams and box spring, check behind the headboard and the seams of upholstered chairs, and look for live bed bugs, shed skins and dark spotting.
Next: browse pest control by pest type, check national cost ranges, or see coverage by state and city.
What does the five minute check look like?
Bed bugs travel in luggage, so the aim is to find them before your bag touches the bed or the carpet. Put the bag in the bathroom first, because tile and a hard tub give an insect almost nowhere to hide, then work outward from the mattress to the furniture nearest the bed.
Use your phone light and spend most of the time at the head of the bed. Bed bugs stay close to where people sleep, so mattress seams, the box spring and the back of the headboard are where evidence shows up first. Chairs and sofas more than a few feet away matter much less.
What am I looking for?
Five kinds of evidence, in roughly this order of reliability. Any one of them is enough to stop unpacking and ask for a different room.
- Live bed bugs: flat, oval, reddish brown, roughly apple-seed size
- Pale translucent shed skins in seams and crevices
- Dark spots that look like felt-pen marks on the mattress, box spring or bed frame
- Rust-colored smears on sheets
- Tiny pale eggs in seams, about a millimeter long
What should I do when I get home?
Treat the return trip as the real risk point. Anything that was in the hotel room goes through heat before it goes into a bedroom, because dryer heat is what reliably kills every life stage.
- Unpack in a hard-floored area such as a laundry room, garage or bathroom, not a bedroom
- Put all clothing, worn or not, straight into a hot wash and a hot dryer cycle
- Run items that cannot be washed through the dryer on high heat where the fabric allows
- Vacuum the suitcase inside and out, including seams and wheels, and empty the vacuum outside
- Store luggage away from bedrooms, ideally in a garage or basement
What if I find bed bugs in the room?
Do not move to an adjacent room, because bed bugs move between neighboring rooms through shared walls and utility runs. Ask for a room in a different part of the building, or change hotels entirely.
Report what you found to the front desk so the property can have the room inspected and treated. Photograph the evidence before you leave, and keep your luggage closed and off the floor while the room change is arranged.
How to check a hotel room for bed bugs in five minutes
- Park your luggage in the bathroom: Leave bags in the bath or on a hard bathroom surface, not on the bed, the floor or the upholstered bench.
- Pull back the bedding: Strip the sheets at the head of the bed and inspect the mattress seams, piping and tufts with your phone light.
- Check the box spring and frame: Lift the mattress edge and look along the box spring seams, staples and the joints of the bed frame.
- Look behind the headboard: Wall-mounted headboards lift off their brackets. Check the back and the wall behind it, a classic harborage spot.
- Inspect nearby soft furniture: Check the seams of upholstered chairs, the sofa and the luggage rack straps within a few feet of the bed.
- Keep luggage off the floor: If the room is clear, use a hard luggage rack away from the bed and keep clothing in the bag rather than in drawers.
- Heat everything when you get home: Unpack on a hard floor and run all clothing through a hot dryer cycle before it enters a bedroom.
Frequently asked questions
Where do bed bugs hide in a hotel room?
Mattress seams and piping, box spring seams and staples, bed frame joints, behind wall-mounted headboards, and the seams of upholstered chairs and sofas within a few feet of the bed.
Can bed bugs travel in my suitcase?
Yes, that is their main way of spreading. Keeping luggage off beds and floors, and heat-drying clothing on return, are the two habits that most reduce the risk of bringing them home.
Does a clean or expensive hotel mean no bed bugs?
No. Bed bugs are a hitchhiking problem, not a hygiene problem, and they occur across all price points. The five-minute check is worth doing regardless of the property.
Should I change rooms if I find bed bugs?
Change to a room in a different part of the building, not the room next door or directly above or below, because bed bugs move between adjacent rooms through walls and utility runs.
What temperature kills bed bugs in laundry?
A hot wash plus a full cycle in a hot dryer reliably kills all life stages. The dryer heat matters more than the wash, so dry items on the hottest setting the fabric allows.
How long does the check take?
About five minutes for the bed, the box spring, the headboard and the nearest soft furniture. It is quicker than the room change it saves you, and it is worth repeating at every property.
